The International Flag for Planet Earth

Oskar Pernefeldt from the Beckman’s College of Design in Stockholm set himself the prestigious challenge of designing a flag for planet Earth, for his major graduation project. His design focuses on elements which are common to everyone on Earth; a blue background representing the planet’s water mass and seven interlocking rings that are arranged into a flower (a symbol of life) in the centre.

Pernefeldt explains that the flag should be used when representing Earth in space and also to remind people that we share this planet, regardless of national boundaries. Pernefeldt ultimately hopes the flag could be used to colonise Mars in 2025.

For an increasingly globalised and interconnected world, it seems odd that we don’t have a flag that represents the entire planet. What better way to represent Earth than by a flag that unifies everyone?
